Running MRP in GP 2018

Does anyone run MRP for Manufacturing requirements?   We are finding many difficulties including the system missing sites and not recognizing existing open POs.  Any tips would be welcome thank you--- #manufacturing NTI

    Hi Rick,

MRP is not easy to setup but it does work.  We have implemented it for several customers.

For the site to be included in MRP, you should check the box Calculate MRP for this site (Cards>>Site>>Planning button)

For the PO's to be recognized, the items on the PO have to have their Resource Planning card associated with the site on the PO line have the same checkbox marked as well as their Order Policy selected among (Lot for Lot, Fixed Oder Quanity, Period Order Quantity)

These are the essential tips for your case.  Try them and let us know.

    Regards

    Hi Rick,

Yes, many manufacturers use MRP, it works well if properly set up and operated.

And it's complex to get it "right".

GP2018 MRP is fine, the MRP and manufacturing product modules have not changed materially since GP10.

There are a number of "gotchas", biggest of which is whether or not you need to plan an item for more than one site - it does not tell you that you have an oversupply in one location and an undersupply in another - does not recommend transferring from the site in surplus to the site in shortage vs. buying/making more for the site in shortage.

Next biggest issue is the quality/accuracy of your data and understanding which fields actually drive which calculations.  Quantities, dates, sites, using the correct fields for the situation are all critical.  It's easy to make the wrong assumption in your setups and thus get wrong calculations.

Having said that, when you "dial it in", it works great.  Push the MRP Regen button and it pulls in the data from throughout the enterprise - what do I need (sales orders, forecasts, manufacturing demand for components or subassemblies, shortages vs. the safety stock quantity "order point qty"), what do I have (on hand inventory, incoming/in process POs and MOs), then calculating what do I need to get.  Easy, granular (calculating on a daily basis, from yesterday - past due - forward to the end of the desired calculation range.)

The MRP Plan that is developed is just a plan - PO and MO recommendations, and "exceptions" (issues to be dealt with).  Running MRP Regen doesn't hurt anything, it's just a plan.  Once you can trust the plan (this is the fun part, truly understanding and verifying that it's recommending what you would actually like it to do), there are easy-to-use tools to mass-create POs and MOs, as desired.

Happy to discuss your situation.  It's best to talk "live" to quickly get an understanding of where you are and what your journey will be like.  I've worked with a number of GP Manufacturing clients making the next step in the journey, from using Manufacturing to using MRP.  Each manufacturing situation is unique, it's important to implement in a way that supports your manufacturing and purchasing planning and execution functions.  Again, happy to help.

    Hi Rick,
I use MRP every day and it works wonderful. Our purchasing department also uses it but they have a custom report that our partner made for us.

But like Wassim said there are several thing that have to be set up properly for it to be used for either area.

I'll help in whatever way I can.

    Michelle,

I will begin looking at NTI's setup and begin from there.  Our biggest problem is for the procurement function.  The messaging does not seem to be accurate; however, for the Planning aspects and suggestions for Manufacturing Orders the process is working better.
