Dynamics GP Analysis Cubes

    Hi all,

I am looking for some reference material related to using PowerBI with GP.  Does a reference exist for what data is available via the Dynamics GP Analysis Cubes? I seem capable of finding instructions on how to install the Analysis Cubes, but I cannot find a reference for what  data from GP is available once they are installed.

I'm look for a reference to determine if the data that is most valuable to my organization is available through the cubes. We don't monitor our AR or AP the way a for-profit organization would.  We care more about our GL and Fixed Assets.

    Thanks,
    Sharon

    Sharon,

Is there a reason you want to deploy Dynamics GP Analysis Cubes?  Power BI's backend is a Tabular Analysis cube and that can connect directly to Dynamics GP tables.  By introducing Dynamics GP Analysis Cubes, you create another layer of software that can break before the data comes into Power BI for analysis.

I have done several Power BI with Dynamics GP data blog post and shared the SQL scripts that I used.  Here is the link to those SQL scripts and Power BI template: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/h08a58lxcv6s99f/AAArKSjxJV0cVcslnPhnHRnya?dl=0.  I always start my Power BI model with a good date dimension and you can find that here with a lot of great DAX language references too.

    Hello @Barry Crowell

We haven't specifically decided to use the Analysis Cubes. I'm looking for a reference describing what is available in the Analysis Cubes to determine whether they would be more or less useful than a direct database connection.

The challenge we face is that our PowerBI analyst is not on the Finance team, does not understand Dynamics GP, and will need to be guided to the correct data. Right now we export the data to Excel and convert it manually to an appropriate dataset for the analyst because our Director does not want this analyst accessing the Financial data directly. I am hoping the Analysis Cubes might alleviate some of this extra processing by our Finance team.

    Thanks,
    Sharon

I would direct your Power BI person to Victoria Yudin's site.  It has ready views and other object descriptions which will make the creation of the display very easy.

If you want another option, ETL Source has a whole series of pre-built Power BI reports for Dynamics GP.  No development required - just plop them in and point them at your company database.

    Sharon,

Here is the link to the Analysis Cube download guide for installation.  The guide has the details for what is included in the fact tables (transactions) and the dimension tables (Cards in GP).  From a brief review of the guide, it looks like fixed assets is not included.

As Blair stated Victoria Yudin's website has a lot of great views that I would direct to Power BI person to.
