MICR PRINTER

We are looking to get a MICR printer and have a MICR line printed on the check. Since GP does not have the MICR font nor does it have exact measurements lines, we are looking for a printer that will come with a check formatting software that will be able to verify our checks are in compliance. Since we have never done this before, can you tell me what is a good MICR printer for first time users and which check formatting software works well with GP? Also,  what is the connection between MICR printer and GP and how do those two work together? We have been told that HP printers are good, and that Tory or Versa Check software are compatible with GP. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you!

    Hi @Kristina Plecas

While other users may be able to help regarding the printer.

While I am unaware of your complete environment and stress that you'll need to do thorough research then:   I wanted to suggest that you might want to look into Mekorma MICR software.

In addition to that you might find this recent discussion on the forums helpful.

    Hi @Kristina Plecas,

I agree with @Jo deRuiter, Mekorma has a long, solid history with GP, and they are very easy to work with!

    HI @Kristina Plecas

I stand with @Jo deRuiter and @Frank Heslin

We use Mekorma software for check printing and have since 2003 when we implemented GP. It takes care of the formatting and does not require a special printer. The only additional cost was a MICR cartridge to print with magnetic ink, but recently discovered that our bank's scanning process no longer requires magnetic ink. So as you do your research you may want to verify what type of ink your bank can read. Along with formatting and printing, Mekorma has check routing workflows to provide paperless approval. Their customer support is wonderful and I've gotten one on one help with a variety of items.

I would be happy to answer any other questions, just let me know.

We use the Mekorma MICR product.  It is fairly easy to use and only requirement for the printer is that is has magnetic toner.

I also recommend MICR and have been using it for years.  If you would like to evaluate an alternative, I have also used PrintBoss with Dynamics GP.

    @Kristina Plecas:

We have two HP Laserjet P3015 printers. We also use Mekorma MICR. It works well with GP and is easy to setup and maintain updates. One thing I want to pass on is when you have more than one printer to print checks each of them must be using the same driver. That is what I was told by Mekorma tech support a year and a half ago. I'm not sure if it still applies.

    Thanks

We just finished implementing Mekorma MICR for Payables with an HP LaserJet M506 using MICR cartridges from Amazon.

In our case, we did a simple ROI, and the price difference between purchasing custom pre-printed check stock and blank stock paid for the purchase price of the software in year 1.

It came with a lot of bonuses including the automatic capture of check images (either as separate PDF or directly associated with the transaction in GP), and a whole host of security features to control printing of checks. i.e. you can set it up to require 2 user passwords to print a check batch, a workflow to allow remote approval of a bath, or plain simple GP security.

The check layout editor was simpler to use than GP report writer, and had several sample templates to work with.

We had a few gotchas with the position of the MICR line, case sensitivity of the format files, and proper configuration for direct deposit remittances, but the manual, online FAQ and support email were able to resolve the issues we did have.

A couple of quick thoughts.  We have a lot of customers who do MICR printing (mostly using PrintBoss) and HP printers do seem to play nice.  Mekorma has a ton of functionality so review all the options there - it does install into GP - tables, modified forms, modified reports, etc.  PrintBoss uses a modified report but doesn't install anything within GP.  It works more like a printer - you print to a PrintBoss "printer" and that triggers the program.

With either option, you may not need MICR toner.  Most banks no longer run checks through the magnetic reader machine and only scan them using just a normal scanner.  I haven't used leaded toner in 10+ years.
    Hope that helps,
    Windi
