Headless Server Configuration for GP

  • 1.  Headless Server Configuration for GP

    Posted 5 days ago
    Hello all!

Has anyone heard of configuring a SQL and terminal server for GP, in a head less configuration? Our companies ideal setup is a headless configuration on any on-prem servers to reduce security concerns and increase automation of deployments. I haven't seen anything that suggests this is possible with GP.

Also if not possible, has anyone setup an automated deployment of GP and it's modules? Wondering what would be considered specific for GP in this type of deployment.

Any help is appreciated on these topics!

Without knowing exactly what you consider "headless"  I can say that I have not installed a GP SQL Server, GP Web Client Server or GP Citrix Server or GP RD Web Server on anything but a rack using remote access in 20 years. And now the Web and Citrix servers are probably 80% virtual servers in VMWare or other and never have a keyboard or monitor attached to the rack for direct access except in some exceptional circumstance.
Also have never had a GP client installed or accessible on a GP SQL Server or any application software for that matter installed on a SQL server...well not in a dozen years or so for any kind of GP user use.
Automated deployment to me means clone a new template GP Citrix server into the XenApp farm. We have not installed or used a GP fat client on a LAN in 20 years with the only exception being a GP Dynamics Process Server high uptime client on the rack.
In fact, the last GP LAN install I saw was in 1999 and by the end of the year it was moved to Citrix. About 100 concurrents.
We would not install or support a GP LAN environment  today for any number of users.. Even as few as five should be RD Web.

Thank you for the input Thaddeus. Headless in our case means without a GUI. Sorry for the confusion. So, looking to see if anyone, or yourself, has setup GP SQL with out an interface and only from command line.

    Thanks!

Silent installs? I have used variations on these for our last few updates.

I have also sleuthed out some command lines for several of the 3rd party plug-ins as well. Not all vendors play well or document the steps, but it is possible.
