GP is Lagging

We are having issues with GP lagging or slowing down recently. Usually when we add sever space it speeds back up. We added server space a few weeks ago and are still experiencing slowness. We are on a terminal server if that means anything! Has anyone experienced this and what have you done to fix it?

Lagging how? During GP Startup, opening certain GP screens, SmartLists? Certain times of the day?

Isolate the issue from Terminal Services. RDP directly to the server, log into GP, and record some times where slow GP process was most noticeable. Repeat for a user logged in as normal from Terminal services.

Once you have identified if the problem is Terminal Services or not, you can focus on SQL level and network level causes. Find a way to test for both.

We had a(n internally) famous slowdown a few years back that was blamed on large SmartLists. It turned out another department ran some backups and other processes that brought the network to a crawl.

We have ran into lagging systems when something has changed, updates, network changes or new software entered into the environment.  If it is not on your server, it could be any new software that is running at the same time on the terminal.  We have found that some IM software or self built software will cause latency issues when used in tandem with GP.  Firewall and network changes are also a culprit in our environment.

Diagnosing the issue is difficult, have users keep a log with date, time, and what they were doing.  This can help narrow your search.

That could be a number of things but I would suggest that you have your SQL team look at your transaction logs and how often that you are doing a backup and maintenance.      The Transaction logs will keep growing till you back them up.

We too have been experiencing lag times with GP (and SalesPad) and I noticed that it started about the same time the media was reporting vulnerabilities associated with processing chips/hardware(?).  Over time, we experienced incremental increases in the frequency of these "delays" to the point that I have ordered new servers and am stepping up my schedule for upgrades for fear my server is about to crash.  We operate in a terminal server environment as well.  I've had IT check everything we can think of and they cannot explain the lagging.  If the new servers resolve the issue, I'll let you know.

See my recent article here on some common causes of Dynamics GP latency.  It could be other factors such as backups (as mentioned in another response), indexing, etc.  We would need additional information about the environment to narrow it down, but that should give you a few things to review.
Let me know if there is any way we can help.

Most likely running out of RAM if I had to guess. You should check the server's performance monitor to see what is spiking.  If nothing jumps out at you then do the same on the user computer itself, that will be the best way to find out where the Performance is going and then you can make your adjustments from there.
