CL & Reconcile Before Upgrade

    Is there any "magic" to doing CL & Reconcile prior to a version upgrade in GP? I ask because we're unable to get through CL & Reconcile due to time constraints and other issues at my company but want to do an upgrade from 2013R2 to 2018. I'm wondering if going through CL & Reconcile is a true requirement or more of a recommendation. Thanks for the feedback.

    Hey @Jon Godwin, a couple thoughts...

    - You could always run your CL & reconcile days/weeks in advance of the upgrade

    - I personally don't think it's a "requirement", we've definitely upgraded in the past without doing it but depending on your GP situation (how long has it been, how often do you have data-related issues, customizations, ISVs, etc), could obviously save you a ton of headaches during the upgrade process itself)

    - Check out GP Power Tools. There are some amazing pre-upgrade related tools in there that make the upgrade life easier. I don't know if they technically replace CL or Reconcile but they definitely check for other data/environment-related issues that would throw your upgrade awry. Cc'ing @David Musgrave who can weigh-in!

    Keep us posted!

    @Kyle Malone, CPA

    Thanks for the mention.

    @Jon Godwin, I can see you already have a free 30 day GP Power Tools trial period active.

    Kyle is correct that the Database Tools module of GP Power Tools has the amazing Database Validation Tool. This tool is the culmination of my 13 years in Microsoft support and over 200 hours development (for initial version). It is designed to look for and find all the common causes of upgrade failures and fix them. It will ensure that the GP users/companies/company access is matched in the SQL logins/databases/database users. It removes junk records from the Dynamics Utilities tables, checks for Account Framework issues and ensures that structure in SQL for all tables match their dictionary definitions. All this will help ensure a smooth upgrade.

    However, it does not validate the contents of the tables in any way. That is what Check Links does. And it does not update totals or summary balances. That is what Reconcile does.  Database Validation ensures everything at the lower SQL level is in order and does not look at the data itself.

    A final note: Database Validation is not fully functional during a trial period. We were finding that too many consultants were installing GP Power Tools to ensure smooth upgrades and using the trial period with absolutely no intention of ever purchasing the product.

    Please watch the Benefits Presentation to see why every GP customer globally should have GP Power Tools:

    Jon,

    Here is the 'magic' I use:   do a test upgrade first.

    Kyle gave excellent advice to run the CL and Reconcile ahead of the upgrade.  You should run a test upgrade after this to identify any and all issues lurking in the darkness.  Why take the risk?  You should know everything before you launch your upgrade.

    Reply to the group or me individually if you need any guidance on doing a test upgrade.

    Thanks, everyone for the feedback and suggestions. I'm running a test upgrade now and have found a few small issues but it seems successful so far.
