#PST Tool - Item number modifier & Combiner. Does this work?

Hello Group, This will be my first question post (yahoo),

My company uses GP 2015 R2 and in my first year here, we have attended to use the PST Tool Item Number Modifier and Item Number Combiner a few times with no success as we have run into many error messages which have cost us $$$ trying to get this to run with our current GP Partner.

We are looking into using one of GPUG expert to help us but being new to GP, I would like to know if this is a common issue using this PST Tool, or is it that our GP environment is a mess?

Side note, this group is great helping us and I thank you all for your time and expertise........

    Felix-

What third parties do you have?

Also can you tell us what errors you have received in the past?

Certain third parties can have issues with PSTL- So always run them in the test company first.

If you can provide us a tiny bit more we are glad to help.  We also can connect together and review if you have a few minutes.

    Thank you!

    Thank you for your reply.

I already have someone from the GPUG helping us out as I just posted the question to learn if other in this group had issues with this tool and their experience with it.

    Felix,

To answer your question...    Yes.  The tool works great.  I have used it countless times for many companies.

Follow Deb's advice regarding Third Parties and testing.

You may have customizations interfering as well.

Also, there is no 'undo' button when combining.  Be careful!

All of the PSTL tools come with a very large disclaimer/warning: to try things out in a test company first.

I've used the item combiner/modifier and I can guess what issue you ran into: it changed values in other tables associated with custom tweaks or third-parties.  The PSTL tool looks for any field in any table in the dbo schema with a name ITEMNMBR for the values you specify and changes them.  It doesn't care where that table came from or whether or not it was an original Dynamics GP table.  We ran into this when we tested the PSTL item combiner/modifier and had to make copies of our custom tables as backups when we did it in production so we could undo the PSTL changes to those tables.  If the tables had been created in a schema other than dbo (or if the fields had been named ItemNumber or some such) they would have remained unchanged.

If you actually ran into a different issue, I'd appreciate any info you are willing to share!

@Felix Cartagena I am a huge user of PSTL. I actually spent about 3 hours this weekend using the item number modifier. But like others have said, use caution with any customizations and third party products. With the item number combiner, it can be difficult depending on the items you are trying to merge. I've found it may work well for any "purchased" items, but it does NOT work with "made" items that we have linked with our manufacturing.

    @Aleiha Hanson,
Part of your issues with the PSTL Item combiner go back to what @Blair Christensen explained.. the tools is too 'dumb' to differentiate GP tables from 3rd party product tables.. solely doing the changes based on that ITEMNMBR field name.. so GP Manufacturing a little a special module, several of the Item numbers are stored in fields that have a different naming convention (just thinking about STTITNUM & ENITMNBR, and BOM's with PPN_I).

One thing that is important to do, after every new module add to GP, the PSTL setup has to be re-run in order for the system to go thru newly added tables and eventually take note of them. This is mentioned in the PSTL documentation.

@Beat Bucher you should re-program PSTL :) Wouldn't it be nice if all the tables and tools just got along?
I wonder...we have Willoware and it has a way to update fields, and you can "build" your own update...it then goes out and grabs all tables (including manufacturing). Perhaps that works nicer with the third party tables for things like this. I will do some testing.

Actually, this may be possible to do now that SQL Server supports table comments, i.e. comments about the table itself in SQL.  If there were a tool in the Dynamics Setup which could go and set a comment on all the Dynamics GP tables - like say during an upgrade when it is checking things anyway - then other tools could be used to look for that comment to determine if it is a GP table or not.  This would be really handy because there are a lot of third party customizations and even Smartlists that won't function within GP unless they are in the dbo schema.

I am amazed at all the comments and feedback and I thank you all for you.

I have learned a lot on this tool from your feedback which looks like there is some work that needs to be done before and after (testing/researching/reviewing results) and not all fields from a 3rd party will get updated if the database column name does not match "itemnmbr" (unless another 3 party tool is used along with if a database tables is not within the GP DBO schema, these does not get updated with the PST tool. Thanks, GP!

Did I miss any other extra work needed for this tool to work?

In contrast, the PST for customer-side modifier/combiner was as a charm with no extra effect, our GP user can use it as they please as a tool should work if it goes public.

I also hope this helped other GP users in their quest in learning more on this "Free" tool that GP has provided for its user base.

To use this PST or not to use it, will be the question many will need to ask them self.........
