Check Links in parallel

We're on GP 2018 and we're looking for ways to improve our business process for running Check Links and Reconcile.  Has anyone run the GP Check Links processes in parallel?  E.g, run Check Links SOP and Check Links POP simultaneously?

    Hi @Michael Beaupre

My question is, why are you running CheckLinks and Reconcile on SOP, POP and so forth on a regular basis?

These are utilities that only need to be run if there is an issue.  If these utilities are always finding issues then the question is, what about your daily processes are causing these issues - that is what needs to be addressed.  If GP is working correctly then issues that need to be corrected by CheckLinks should be a rare occurrence.

My short answer past the above advice is the should NOT be run in tandem.  All of these utilities are, in a way, inter-related.

For instance, if you run reconcile on POP in tandem with CheckLinks and CheckLinks actually removes or changes data in the POP tables then the "in-tandem" POP reconcile is now useless anyway.

Please let us know why you are running these on a regular basis and if they are finding things each time you run them....I'm so curious!

I run Check Links and Reconcile on a monthly basis after ensuring good backups and with everyone out of the system. I have a specific order of steps and that precludes running in parallel, and because I'm running these specifically to review any errors doing all the steps sequentially is important. Speed or convenience don't factor in doing this as a proactive and maintenance-driven procedure.

I see a lot of discussion about doing Check Links and Reconciles only as a repair or as maintenance, and I think there are enough people on both sides to make this an environment specific decision. I certainly have used both processes in repairs but for us the file maintenance procedure is important. I compare reports with previous runs and when necessary communicate with the departments about errors. For us, daily or weekly would be too much,  but spending one day a month doing my best to make sure our data is checked and validated works.

So, for me, scripting this or running in parallel wouldn't work because both the process and the results are important to the company.

IMHO I would not run check links on the POP files.
Based on my experience and testing,
They only check the integrity of the PO files,
they do not check the POP Receipt files nor do they check the link files.
Which means the files that affect the GL and AP modules are not checked.

The history of GP is they were really late in releasing the POP module.
Personally, I think the POP check links routines are incomplete,
and they take FOREVER to run.

When we upgraded versions of Great Plains several years ago I had a discussion with Great Plains support.
They do not recommend constantly running the check links file.
Our company has a decent amount of data (20 million+ GL records) and literally had not run check links for years.
I twisted their arms to try to get them to recommend us to run check links for all files,
I could only get them to recommend rebuilding the RM and PM transaction and key files.

We have some heavy modifications to our POP modules.
We restored the production data to test and ran check links there, POP in particular,
and captured the check links reports to text files.

That was a very useful test.

Check links destroys data, but with this approach we looked at the data in production
and made some tweaks to the data and also a few program changes.

We went five years without running Check Links and Reconcile (CR) at all (except to cleanup some specific issues).  Last year we practiced in TEST and created some scripts and processes around CR.  We ran CR twice in Production last year and now we plan on running it in Production every January.  There are always numerous issues in Inventory and Project Accounting and CR is able to clean up a lot of the mess.  The other modules typically have only one or two issues each.  We start our CR process at close of business on Friday and go through the night (which includes reports and validations) and finish on Saturday at 6:00 pm.  We're wondering if anyone has tried running the Check Links processes in parallel in order to shorten the window.  Thank you for the replies.

If you jump off a cliff you risk hitting some rocks and breaking some bones.  I would never, never run check links processes in parallel.  I would never run check links on production data without first running it on a copy of the production data in a test environment.  Check links can destroy data, and then what do you do?

I totally agree Bruce!  Before we run Check Links and/or Reconcile in Production, we refresh our TEST system and run it there first.
