    Two requests:
    1. Can anyone suggest a document management system that works well with GP?
    2. Does anyone have a sort of ad hoc reporting front end that's more user-friendly than SmartLists?

    That's a new one on me! I've never heard that SmartLists aren't user-friendly! Are you getting complaints from users about SmartLists? There are certain things that it can't do, but one can always export to Excel to do more formatting, subtotaling, filtering, pivot tables, etc.

    The only alternative that might be more user-friendly would be SmartView from eOne. SmartView can be used outside of GP.

    @Art Cabot,
    You could try SmartList Builder from eOne to allow you more customized reports within SmartLists.  Otherwise, we use Excel refreshable reports and Excel query for most of our reporting.  Both pull the data directly from GP but allow you to manipulate the data within Excel.  If your team is more familiar with Excel, that might be a great option for you.

    Thanks, Sara.  I've actually had, and extensively used, SmartList Builder for years, but we have a new CFO who doesn't even like SmartLists; he's used to a more GUI-based ad hoc reporting interface, I think.  Anyhow, I'm scheduled for a demo of eOne's SmartView on Thursday.

    Oooohhhhh! I get it! You didn't say that it was your CFO! SmartLists are definitely a more down-in-the-trenches kind of tool, not up in the C-suite!

    Is the CFO looking for detailed reports? Or for dashboards and visual representation of information? Are you a Power BI shop?

    Regards,

    Steve:
    I think he's looking for an easy-to-use report tool that will let EVERYBODY query the system for what they want, even if they don't KNOW what they want!  Kinda like the ruler in the Bible who wanted his dream interpreted but couldn't remember what the dream WAS!

    @Art Cabot,

    Well! I hope that doesn't lead to lions' dens or writing on the wall or plagues!

    I'm reminded of what Rob Collie said. He's the author of Power Pivot and Power BI, about the best book there is on those topics:
    People don't know what they need until they've seen what they asked for.

    Art,
    We want to remember Encore also has Advanced SmartLists - this is an add on to the native GP SmartLists....  like putting it on steriods!
    Advanced SmartList (ASL) is a seamless extension to SmartList Favorites, a Microsoft Dynamics GP query tool. It
    adds power to the existing SmartList application by giving users of all levels the ability to create advanced
    customized inquiries which result in easier, faster access to the information stored in Dynamics GP. Endorsed as
    one of the most useful Dynamics GP add-ons for speed and ease of use, ASL also offers flexible data manipulation
    and navigation capabilities.

    If you want a cool reporting tool that is different than SmartLists- check out ActivReporter.  This is a great reporting tool that will convert your MR reports, has budgeting and Power BI.
