Macro Issue

  • 1.  Macro Issue

    Posted Apr 15, 2019 04:03 PM

We have been using a macro to print packing slips for several years.  Lately we have been getting an error.

    It says

No Modal Dialog appeared.  (Line #24).

The line number varies by person trying the macro.  Shipping and receiving gets line 24, I get line 6.

It started erroring out about a week ago.  No change in hardware, no windows updates applied lately.

    Hi Debbie,

Based on an article I found, it's possible that one of the pop up windows did not appear for the particular record that was being added at that time...
... Maybe if you can isolate the record where you got that error... and then manually try to process it in a test company (restored from a backup prior to when then macro was run) - you might some leads as to why it error-ed out.

    ---
In another article I saw, their issue was caused by a duplicate record in the system - i.e. a different window popped up during the macro run instead of the usual window...

    Hi Debbie

Open up the macro file with notepad and press Ctrl-G to jump to line 24.

What are the details of the modal dialog it is expecting.

We need to work out why the modal dialog did not show and if it will no longer show, we can edit the macro so that it no longer expects the dialog.

    Regards

    David

I have passed the responses onto IT.  The macro is working for others, but not this workstation.  I will let you know.

    Hi Debbie

If you have GP Power Tools - Developer Tools module, we can use Dexterity, SQL, C# or VB.Net code to perform the same automation steps and we can make it more robust than using a macro.

Just a thought. Check out the Benefits Presentation on https://www.winthropdc.com/products_GPPT.htm#Downloads

    We found a solution ....

We checked each line of the macro - it works as it should for other users.

On this workstation, when Outlook is up and running, active (not minimized), the macro has issues.  When Outlook is minimized, it works every time.  We are running Office 365 recently on that work station.

    Hi @Debbie Janssen,
glad you found the culprit.. The issue with Macros is that they are very context sensitive and the slightest out-of-the-norm event can throw them off and stop the macro. This could be as simple as non-GP app taking the focus away from GP and opening a message or simply a notification in the tool bar.
The rule with macros is that you don't want any other apps risking to interfere with it and that's why David's suggestion to use an alternative solution is better, whenever possible.

Our IT person is going to check out Dave's suggestion as well.  But for now, the macro will work until the better option is in place.
