    We recently upgraded from Dynamics GP 2013 to 2018. I have a user who gets the attached error when ever she tries exit  GP. She also encounters the issue that she cannot run a trial balance. Does anyone know what causes this and how to properly resolve this?

    Hi Erin,
    both problems are most probably related.  The Trial balance is a background process and since this process gets stuck behind, there is this error message when trying to logout saying there is a process in the background which did not finish.

    This is something that happens once in a while when the print server is crashing under windows environment or the default printer is not well configured.

    So 2 options here :
    1) If you did not "kill" the user session yet in order to re-try again with a fresh new connected session, this would be my first try just to see if this has happend only for a specific point-in-time printing problem
    2) If you already killed the user's session and retried several times, each time giving the same issue, then I would investigate the printer.  Try changing the default printer of the user and retry.

    Cheers

    Forgot : To kill the user's session, just use the task manager under windows and "end" all Dynamics GP application windows.  Then when you will log back in, the system will tells you the user is already logged in and you will have no choice other than clicking on "Delete" button to delete the active session of the user.

    Thanks Luc,

       That  worked. Now the user is getting the attached mesaage upon launching GP, and she can by pass it and continue to work but it is a nuisance since at the time it pops up there is no function she is trying to access.

    Hi Erin,

    you will have to turn on security profiler to know what is the security privilege that is missing.  It can be done thru Dex.ini or by using the free Winthrop product called Powertools.

    I find is really strange that the user is now requesting access to something missing in his privilege, and this, only since you killed his session...  This is very strange.  Maybe it is because it is trying to recover a batch ?  Did you try the batch recovery window with another user just to see if there are batches to recover ?

    @Luc St-Yves,

    I think that @David Musgrave would be interested to see that his GP PowerTools are free!

    @Erin White-Terrell

    @Steve Erbach is correct that GP Power Tools (http://WinthropDC.com/GPPT) is not free and @Luc St-Yves is correct that it will identify the problem and allow you to fix it very quickly.

    What they both did not mention is that you can install it and start a free 30 day trial to solve this problem and see all the other amazing things it can do for you.

    Check on the Benefits presentation on https://www.winthropdc.com/products_GPPT.htm#Downloads

    Happy New Year

    @Erin White-Terrell

    Great.

    Using the Administrator Settings window on the Features tab, set Security Profiler to Automatically Open on Errors only.

    Then next time the user gets a security privileges error, it will be captured.  Get them to save the profiler log.

    This log can then be imported by the administrator from the Security Profiler window. Then you can click on the window and select Security to get the full details of the window in the Security Information window. Expand the system level node to see how you can grant access to the window.

    Even if you don't enable the Security Profiler, the GP Power Tools logs for that user should already have captured the security error (unless that option has been disabled from the Features tab of the Administrator Settings window).

    Let me know if you have any questions.

    Regards

    David

    One handy tool is the Process Monitor - available right off the main Dynamics GP toolbar drop-down.  For long-running reports like trial balances, this shows them that - yes - something is actually working behind the scenes and encourages them to patiently wait for it.

    With regards to the login screen - the danger in using CTRL+ALT+DEL and killing your GP session is that it leaves that session as an active connection on that company for that user - and they have to clear it before they'll be able to get back in.  I'll bet that the security message you are getting is a warning that the user can't get to the window which allows them to see their existing GP connection so they can kill it and start a new one.  That means that someone with admin rights has to go into Tools -> Utilities -> System -> User Activity (requires password) to clear them.  Alternatively, you can give your users access to that window by adding it to the DEFAULTUSER role.  (I'm not sure which one it is).

    @Blair Christensen and @David Musgrave and @Erin White-Terrell,

    @Beat Bucher and I are reprising our GPUG Summit session, "Dashboard on a Dime for GP Admins" this Thursday at 10:00 CST. Why is this relevant, you ask? Because one of the things the Excel GP Dashboard does is allow the GP Admin to clear an orphaned GP connection using Excel. No login to GP required.

    @Steve Erbach,

    I attended your presentation at Summit.  Did you ever publish your tool?  (You said you would but I never saw it under the Summit materials...)  Pretty please?

    @Blair Christensen,

    All of the files were uploaded to the GPUG Summit 2018 site. Everything should be there... but we're doing the reprise on Thursday to highlight certain things AND to give you a demo you can watch at your convenience.
