Mgmt Reporter excel formatting issue

    Hello there,

    Just recently, I generated my income statement from Management Reporter into Internet Explorer.  When I chose to download the report into "Microsoft Excel" and open the excel report I receive the following message

    "We found a problem with some content in "INCOME STMT (11).slsx.  Do you want us to try to recover as much as we can?  If you trust the source of this workbook, click Yes."

    When I click yes, my information downloads into Excel, but without all the formatting, underlines, spacing etc...

    This is the only report I am receiving this message.  Has this occurred with anybody out there?  If so, do you have any advice for me?

    Thanks
    Joe Braun

    Hi @Joe Braun

    Since this is the only report this is happening on, I would take a look at the differences in formatting on this report as opposed to others in your catalog to see if there is something overt causing the issue!

    Unfortunately, I don't think you've quite given us enough to troubleshoot on, so can you tell us if there is anything at all different about what comes over in this report such as:

    Groupings
    Formatting
    Number of lines of data
    etc.

    Thanks Jo,

    I am going to look at the differences between some of the reports I already have and see if I find anything.  Otherwise I may need to re-create the report from scratch.

    @Joe Braun,

    I've found that exporting a report from the Management Reporter Viewer app into Excel produces far better results then exporting from a browser. I know this doesn't solve your Browser-to-Excel question directly; but to get decent results you might want to save yourself some time by exporting from the Viewer.

    Sincerely,

    Thanks Steve,

    I do have that option.  I should look into that and see how it is different.

    @Joe Braun,

    You'll find that the formatting is converted much more "true-to-life" if the report is exported from the M-R Viewer app rather than from Excel. As @Derek Krebs said, you can set the Viewer app to be the default M-R report viewer. You can also fire up the Viewer separately from your Windows menu. Typically (in Windows 10): Start Menu >> Microsoft Dynamics >> Report Viewer.

    We've had similar problems with SSRS exports to Excel.  There's no fix - the problem is that Microsoft is too busy constantly updating Excel (and Office) and they aren't doing to do the necessary work to keep their other reporting tools (which export to Excel) up to date.  There's no winning this one, I'm afraid.

    And also check in Report Designer within the Report Definition on the "Output and Distribution" tab that the "Microsoft Excel options" are turned on.  I would also recommend being on latest MR 2012 CU16 release and reiterate about using the client viewer (not web viewer) which I prefer as power user for multiple reasons (more lines shown, better tree graphics and navigation, report library administration, inventory and control, etc.)

    Thanks Derek,

    So once I download the report to Explorer, I choose the Mgmt Reporter Report Viewer, instead of Microsoft Excel?  The program is relatively new for me and I have never needed to use another option other than Excel, up to this point.

    Thanks for letting me know Blair.  I am going to re-create the report to see what happens.  Did you have a work around for the same situation?

    ...and you may have the client viewer be the default viewer (as opposed to web viewer) by going inside Report Designer under Tools | Options and turn on "Use Mgt Rpt viewer..."  :)

    Not a pretty one.  We had to create a macro in Excel to clean up/re-apply the errant formatting.  We got to the point where we had spent hours attempting to adjust things in SSRS and get Excel to behave but the problem is in Excel - not SSRS.  Excel is using its own algorithms to lay things out instead of just taking what it is given.  What we finally come to grips with is that Excel is a poor tool for reporting.  There are any number of better solutions.
