Alternative to Analytical Accounting

Does anyone know of alternatives to  GP's AA module?  We want to incorporate the same function of capturing multiple dimensions of transactions just not particular fond of the AA's methods and forms.  We are trying to get to a point that we can generate a VPL and wondering how others have achieved it.

    Hi Justin,

I agree with you about AA.

We are encouraging all of our AA customers to migrate their analytical accounting analysis to the operations part of the business, and for that we are always recommending SalesPad as the main operational ERP, since it allows the tracking of an unlimited number of dimensions, among so many other benefits.

I'd look at Encore's Project Tracking with Advanced Analytics module.   https://www.encorebusiness.com/solutions/project-tracking-with-advanced-analytics/

Thanks All, I'll take a look at Encore.  MDA is what I was thinking of but couldn't recall, Is it tied to AA.  If I uninstall/remove AA do you lose MDA function.  I referring to a video I found of Belinda Allen's (2011), but all she says "if you have AA then you have MDA"  makes me wonder if they are looped into one another.

@Justin Carpenter We have been using MDA for about a year after looking into all three options. Analytical Accounting is not required, and it is already in the base install I believe - you just need to register the module. It is not as savvy as Analytical Accounting, but not as intensive on the upkeep. There are two main maintenance forms, adding Groups with Associated Codes and then tying those Group/Code combinations to an account. When you enter a distribution for a module that has a Group/Code combination associated with it, you will get a logo that prompts you to open a new form and enter distributions against a project (or not). I do not think it is compatible with eConnect (if that is important to you), but the SQL is pretty simple to manage integrations as an alternative.

MDA is separate from AA.  If you have AA you do have MDA, but only because MDA is included by default in GP.

Depending on your needs, MDA could be a good solution.  The major drawbacks: MDA cannot be reported on in Management Reporter, and you cannot budget on them.  But if that's no issue, definitely check out MDA.

Good Morning and thank you @Kim Peterson for suggesting that @Justin Carpenter consider Encore's Project Tracking w/Advanced Analytics as an alternative option to Analytical Accounting.

Justin, I notice that Kim provided a link to our product page where you will find a lot of information including a brief demo overview.  Project Tracking is very flexible and is setup based on the information that you are wanting to capture and report against.   It's easy to implement and learn - especially for an existing GP client.  Our integration point is the native GP transaction entry windows of the core GP modules.

If you have any questions or wish to discuss feel free to reach out.

    Hi Justin,

You've been given a lot of good answers.  Now I'm going to share something about MDA (Multi-Dimensional Analysis) that I am super excited about.  Why MDA?  Personally, I find Analytical Accounting complex and Project Accounting clunky.

For our PowerGP Online offering, which is GP in the cloud, available in both Public and (now) Private clouds, we've enhanced the functionality of this cool Microsoft Dynamics GP module.  I have always loved MDA, but it was missing the ability to Budget.  So, we at Njevity added Budgets!

I made the attached video in direct response to your question.  It shows how to setup MDA, use MDA, use our Budgeting in MDA, and finally see our fantastic Power BI reporting in MDA.  All in less than 7 minutes.

Come on, I'm BI Belinda, was I really going to show you something without bringing Microsoft Power BI to the table.

Everything I show, except budgeting, can be done with GP On-Prem as well!  Hope this helps!

Another approach is to implement Power BI, and build whatever queries you want to see.

    Hi Justin,

I second what the others have said about MDA.  It is a simple, yet powerful alternative to AA!

I agree with what the others have said about MDA.  We implemented AA for a short period of time, but I was not a fan.  For our purposes, MDA was a great alternative.

We do have challenges related to 3rd party applications and MDA.  We've been working with our A/P automation vendor to try to find a way to bring this field over.  We also use SmartConnect to bring our billing over from another system.  SmartConnect can update, but not create, the MDA code.  Our partner helped us solve this challenge by creating a sql script that runs after the SmartConnect import to work around this.  I'm looking at doing something similar for A/P.
