Can you force GP to have all unique batch ID's?

    I have been asked if there is a way to force all batch ID's to be unique. In my 17 years being involved with GP I have never heard this question before and I told them that I am pretty sure the answer is no. I can't even fathom a business purpose for this, but I digress. They pressed the issue and want to know if there might be a 3rd Party (ISV) that offers such a feature. So I am putting it out there to all of my GP peeps. Do you know of such a thing? If so, do tell!

    Great Plains does not enforce this.  Our company had our users enter their initials and the date as the batch name, this is good business practice.

    Great Plains lets you reprint many posted batch reports.

    Hi all

    You could easily use GP Power Tools - Developer Tools module to create a quick customisation to generate Batch IDs for you based on business rules of your choice. For example Module_date_user.

    For more info, Check out http://WinthropDC.com/GPPT

    @David Musgrave,

    Is there a way to account for a user having 2 batches in the same module in the same day?

    @Barbara Gavron

    Just add time into the business rules or a -suffix. For example.

    SOP_190409-1_DM
    SOP_190409-2_DM if -1 batch already exists.

    If we run out of characters we can encode dates and times to use less characters.

    The business rules are up to you to define. Whatever you want GPPT custom triggers can achieve.

    Regards

    David

    With Extender Enterprise from eOne Solutions you would be able to do something like this as well.  We actually have a template created for it as a sample that does the User ID and Date together. You can find the Default Batch Template download here under the Enterprise options.  https://www.eonesolutions.com/extender/downloads/#Templates  You can see a little more documentation on it here as well.  https://www.eonesolutions.com/help-article/default-batch-template-for-extender/

    This concept could be created for all the windows used in GP that require a batch ID.  It could also be changed so that it puts in the module, uses a auto incrementing type number instead of the date and user ID, etc.

    We would be happy to discuss it further with you if you would like.

    Hi Barbara - EthoTech's Next Numeric Collection lets you auto number Receivables, Sales and Payables batches, so they each would have a unique number.

    Good luck in your search.

    Hi Barbara-

    Yes, you can with an add-on. We are using EthoTech's Next Numeric for unique batch IDs and numeric IDs for customers, vendors, salesperson IDs too.

    Thanks @Stephanie Rasmussen!!

    Hope this helps.
