Inventory Reconcile - Repeat offenders

  • 1.  Inventory Reconcile - Repeat offenders

    Hello GPUG,

I was under the impression that inventory reconcile (IR) was supposed to reconcile various discrepancies with inventory.  We switched to using the PSTL version of IR a few years ago, because the native GP method will not complete during the non-business hours.

The problem is we are seeing the same parts show up on the report each time IR is run.  Additionally, over time, new parts get added to the repeating list that never gets smaller, only bigger.

I feel certain, that if we didn't have thousands of the same parts being flagged by the IR routine each time , it would not take nearly as long to run.  We looked at some of the parts that get hit every time, and nothing stands out as a problem.

Can anyone help me troubleshoot this issue?   I am very familiar with the SQL tables in GP, but not so familiar with how GP uses them. I'd like to prevent thousands of the same parts from coming out on the reconcile report each time it is run.

    Thanks,

    #GP2016and2016R2, #Technical

    Don,

I found for the most part, for us few years back, the issues were due to network hiccup and having a lot of remote users. What I did was I reconciled by class ID to reduce the number of items need to be reconciled off hours.  I would take  a real look at your network setup first if not already.  We also had manufacturing in addition to PO receipts.

What specific issue are you having with those same items?

Feel free to inbox me directly.

    Silver,

Sounds reasonable that interruptions in networking can cause all sorts of issues, which could very well be the reason many items are messed up.  Our network has been solid for years, but this problem goes back many years.  We have been living with the fact that inventory reconcile only fixes "some" items, leaving most of them in a broken state.  I didn't know the GPUG community was a valuable resource until attending the last conference in Orlando.  So, I finally decided to see if there was something we can do to reduce or eliminate this long term pain point that started long ago. We have upgraded GP versions many times over the years, but this problem has been happening since GP v9 or V10 before years were integrated into the version.

As far as issues with the parts, I can't say we have any.  Which is why it is confusing that the reconcile process thinks there is a problem, yet does not resolve it.  So each time we run reconcile the report looks very much the same as the last one.  We are running it again tonight, so I will have the exact message GP is reporting about these parts.   The main issue is that reconcile process takes far too many hours, having to repeatedly deal with thousands of the same parts.

We tried to run inventory reconcile yesterday.  GP crashed both times after running for several hours.   I captured some information from the event viewer.  Maybe someone can shed some light on what is going on.   I noticed one of the errors said out of memory, but this SQL server has 48 GB of RAM so that probably isn't the root cause of the problem.

I attached the first in a long string of errors that GP threw just before it crashed.

I dived into the PSTL inventory reconcile process over the last few days and figured out:

    • How PSTL builds the list of parts to work on
    • How to review that list without running the process
    • Some things to look for that cause problems with inventory
    • How to fix many of the the things that PSTL reports but will not fix
    • How to confirm the fixes before running the reconcile process again, and more.
We had so many issues with our inventory, some stemmed from building kits, very old unposted MO's and MPK's, and making adjustments that should not have been made,   What I am unsure about, is how much of this I can share on the forum?   Are there any limits to what can be shared concerning GP processes or in revealing details behind encrypted procedures?

    Hey Don,

We have tried to run the inventory and PSTL reconciles. Both failed on us as well. We have 28,114 active items, with 956 being active raw materials rather than finished goods. We didn't receive any memory issue errors, but the error that we did get, was this one.

    Problem signature:
    Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
    Application Name: Dynamics.exe
    Application Version: 14.0.85.0
    Application Timestamp: 55d4b71b
    Fault Module Name: KERNELBASE.dll
    Fault Module Version: 6.3.9600.19425
    Fault Module Timestamp: 5d26ae6e
    Exception Code: e0434352
    Exception Offset: 00034e28
    OS Version: 6.3.9600.2.0.0.16.7
    Locale ID: 1033
    Additional Information 1: 4c33
    Additional Information 2: 4c33cc301381b6317baf51a00d8e97cb
    Additional Information 3: 98f6
    Additional Information 4: 98f6f2e631e5ed4dc7d5f693cf7a2490

Looking at the connection to our server, we don't find any network issues. I am wondering if it is the amount of items we have. Is there a way to run a reconcile based off of item class?

    Chase,

I have a tons of scripts I used to fix our inventory.  However, all of them are derived from the attached script.   To see what PSTL flags as needing to be reconciled, run the attached script against the company database (on TEST) and then view the contents of dbo.TAIVRec  This will give you a good idea of what is going on and how to move forward. Look in the code for the reasons shown in the table.

I made little snippets of code to also include the actual quantities that didn't match for several of the reasons that we had.  This helped us find the proper screen in GP easier.

I got our inventory reconcile process from crashing after 8-10 hours of running, to running successfully in under an hour.  We have well over 100k parts.

Let me know if there is anything else I can help with.

Thanks for your help, Don. I'll take a look at the scripts you gave.
