We are investigating product life cycle solutions (PLM) that work well with Great Plains. Any receommnendations?

Without knowing more...  take a look at NETSTOCK and StockIQ.  They have solutions that help in inventory.

Thanks Kim.  We are looking more for a PLM solution versus inventory and planning one for integration of our Engineering Control, Product regulatory compliance and document controls tied to products and our MES. Core GP is not adequate.  Key consideration is the PLM's  ease of integration with GP.  Do they work well together.

    Keith,
I noticed a few people mentioned me and my organization in reference to your inquiry so I am going to take a few moments to introduce myself.

My organization has supplied a manufacturing solution for Dynamics GP for over 20 years and we write in Dexterity which means our solutions sit inside of Dynamics GP. We also provide solutions for configuration, pricing and quality management. My own background is APICS and ASQ certifications with around 15 years of hands on operations management before I transferred to the software world.

Typically if I see acronyms like PLM and MES I like to ask what is the vision for that functionality in the organization? Are you already running core manufacturing functionality that is integrated to the rest of your ERP and looking to enhance that capability or have you been running on more disjointed applications and have reached a point where you would like to have a more seamless flow of information across common needs? Whenever we encounter the custom build manufacturing world we will tend to see that the tools for specifying, verifying, buying and building products are often a conglomeration of excel, home grown databases, CAD applications and perhaps a time reporting tool. In that environment there are clear gaps that are being closed with manual processes that duplicate other activities and often the waste inherent in that duplication effort is what drives consideration for fully integrated solutions.

If you are not currently using the native GP Manufacturing functionality and are instead operating on a diverse set of other tools then you may find that our manufacturing solution, along with our engineering change functionality, quality management and tools for data collection can provide you with an all up platform that meets your needs to incorporate PLM and MES with your ERP. If however you are already fully committed to GP Manufacturing then you are more likely looking to add the MES capability, for which I can make recommendations and the PLM, for which I can't.

Please reach out if I can be of any help.

    Hi Frances,

Thank you for reaching out.  We extensively use Dynamics GP's manufacturing functionality and have integrated it with a 3rd party PLM and another 3rd party MES.  As we look at our digital strategy & footprint, we are investigating replacing our PLM with one that may integrate more readily with GP.  Some of our key PLM controls involve Product Regulatory, Product and Supporting Product Documentation ECO and Revision Management. Our engineering team has been tasked with addressing the core requirements within our PLM that cannot be supported elsewhere.  We do not think, however, that core GP ECO controls are robust enough for our needs as they currently stand. Most of our ECR / ECO controls are currently in our PLM. The results are mapped to GP via a Connector.

I would be interested to hear more about Horizons engineering change functionality to see if that would satisfy some of the functionality that ties us to our current PLM - allowing us to potentially address gaps elsewhere.

Other than some minor modifications, we try to avoid the custom build manufacturing world. A key consideration today for us is the ease integration-of a solution (built to work with MS GP preferably) versus a best of breed approach. As a MS House, we have exploited the MS ISV eco system to extend the functionally of GP. Unfortunately, we are struggling to find a PLM solution. Most that we see are tied to the more extensive ERP systems, like Oracle, SAP, Dynamics 365, Infor, etc., whether native or add-on functionality.

We have several initiatives and project underway, all supporting our corporate lean and digital transformation strategy driving this review. We may be looking at our MES tool as well.  So that may a further discussion.

My role is an internal executive consultant bridging business process and tools with a focus on operations and supply chain. My background has been across all aspects of the end-to-end supply chain both as a leader and individual contributor, with stints in operational consulting and ERP implementations.

Hi Keith, we have several customers who have opted for Arena because there's a baked integration available by a company called QBD Systems (http://www.qbdsys.com/ ). Arena's PLM has an ERP data exchange program built-in (costs a few bucks to set-up, initialize, etc). That will push out the .pdx files (Arena's proprietary BOM format, XML-based) based on whatever filters you set, eg. lifecycle, category, etc.

Then you need the QBD program to pull that into GP. QBD's adapter is already configured to work with GP. It scales pretty well too.  We have one customer who uses QBD to synch all their Arena data - 3k items, 1k BOMS, 5-levels deep - on a nightly schedule. Been running 3 years with no problems.
