Report Writer Calculated Field Help!

I am trying to write a calculated field in Report Writer so that it appends an asterisk to the beginning and end of a field, so it can be read by a barcode scanner. I will admit that with as much as I have customized report layouts in the past, I have never been able to get the calculated fields to work, but now it is a necessity. I originally followed instructions from this page: https://www.tek-tips.com/viewthread.cfm?qid=1683110

This is where I am right now:

    Other syntax I have tried:

    # "*" + STRIP( SOP_HDR_WORK.SOP Number ) + "*"
    # "*" + STRIP(LNG_STR( SOP_HDR_WORK.SOP Number ) ) + "*"

The error message is particularly unhelpful (Error in equation), so I am not sure where to start. Any insight is very much appreciated on where I am going wrong.

You're almost there.  Don't use the +.  Use the CAT (concatenate) instead.  It will insert # in the formula.  i.e.   "*" # STRIP(SOP_HDR_WORK.SOP Number) # "*"
