GP Upgrade

Hello! The company I work for is using GP 2016 and I understand support will end this year. What does that mean for a small business like us? We have a Microsoft Enhancement Plan and we pay for support tickets as needed. It expires after support ends. Pardon my ignorance, I'm fairly new to GP. We might be staying with an in house solution i.e. terminal server. How soon should we upgrade? We will fall into the extended support category after July I'm assuming. Thanks!

    Hi @Eddie Madera

When you 'go off of mainstream support' in a version, that really just means that there will be no code published for your version to update normal items that usually need 'updating' yearly:  1099 forms, W2 forms, tax tables, payroll rules, Fixed Asset rules, etc.

NORMALLY, you go through your partner for support of GP, such as support calls, first and they might escalate it to Microsoft if they need to.

Yes, you will go into extended support with MICROSOFT, but your partner can continue to support earlier versions if they wish.

Only difference is you will not get needed updates.  For instance, this year there was a massive change to 1099 processing with the new 1099-NEC, your version had code published that made it possible to print the 1099-NEC's.  However, next year, if there is a change, your version would NOT get that.

All that said, unless you have a super-complex installation of GP, there really is no reason not to be brought up to the most recent version so that you can continue to get yearly updates for necessary code changes.

Hello. Thank you for sharing that information Jo. We do not have a complex installation, we use Management Reporter, Integration Manager, MICR and Encore for Project Tracking. The business Dept also uses the 1099 app separately. I will share this info with the head of said department. Thanks again!
