Upgrade from 2015R2 to 2018 R2 - Issues?

We are planning for this upgrade in 2020 and wanted to know as much as possible of issues arising from this upgrade. We are buying time until MS forces us onto the "Modern" GP upgrade process which now starts with GP2019 to the best of my knowledge and requires an upgrade every year. To me it seems MS is planning to end on prem GP in years to come. First step - get everyone on the same version - that is now a reality with GP2019.
Meanwhile back at the ranch, I'd like to make sure our partners are aware of any and all issues with upgrading 2015R2-->2018R2. Appreciate all your help as usual.

    @Michael Leiden,

A really great place to start in outlining any issues with going from one version to the next is here https://mbs.microsoft.com/customersource/northamerica/GP/learning/documentat20ion/system-requirements/dynamicsgpresource#gp2018rtm

Microsoft has known upgrade issues by version on this page as well as links to lots of other great information.

To address the GP2019 every year upgrades:  based on what was discussed at summit at posted in various social media outlets by our awesome community members, it is my understanding that this will not be an 'upgrade' every year type thing in the typical upgrade format that you are currently use to utilizing.  This will be more of a biannual soft upgrade that will enhance the current product adding features, fixing issues, etc.  Basically moving to a more modern type format.  Check out this post for more information on that: https://community.dynamics.com/gp/b/dynamicsgp/posts/what-does-modern-lifecycle-mean-for-microsoft-dynamics-gp @Terry Heley has done a great job of breaking this down for all of us!

Lastly, I have seen posted by several All-stars, VAR's and Microsoft representatives that on-prem is not leaving any time soon.  So that should not be a concern at this time.

Hope your research into the upgrade goes great and I am happy to answer any questions or help in any way.  I am laying out our path to upgrade from 2015 R2 to 2018 R2 at the current moment!  (We are choosing 2018 R2 for this upgrade based on our CFO's desire to remain cutting edge not bleeding edge) :)

Another thought on something to keep in mind.  As I am going through the discovery to determine the process and compatibility, I am reaching out to each of our ISV's.  I have already found several that are going to need upgrade as well to work in the newer versioning, so wanted to share that so you are fully aware it could be multiple pieces to the upgrade if you use ISV's as well.

    Michael,
I am having the same issue today.  Could be something with the site.  I refreshed and was able to get it to load.

I taught at Summit on upgrades and here's my quick checklist:

    1.  Pick a version
    2.  Assess your environment
    3.  Test the upgrade (at least 2x)
    4.  Plan for contingencies
    5.  Breathe
    6.  Upgrade
    7.  Retrospective

A second thought - don't buy the hype from Microsoft.  They keep telling people they should move away from Dynamics GP on premise and move to D365 in the cloud.  The reality is that Dynamics GP on premise isn't going anywhere.  A new release to 2019 was just announced at Summit and 2020 is in progress, so it will be around for at least another 10 years (til 2030).  Of particular note, please keep in mind that there is no upgrade process to move from GP to D365.  It is a complete reimplementation, meaning new tooling, different functionality, and a different look and feel, i.e. lots of user training.  They aren't even remotely the same product lines despite the name.  Feel free to do the comparison, but look at the pricing and functionality because D365 doesn't support many of the third party add-ons nor does it have the stable of functionality currently available in GP.  Give it a couple of years and they will fill things out more, but right now its pretty basic.

    Hi Michael-

We are in the final testing for 2018 R2 -- currently running 2015 R2 like you are right now. Am not sure if it's just because of extra planning and testing, but this upgrade testing has been flawless once the latest update for 2018 R2 was released.

Like others have said, I also would not be concerned about all the doom and gloom noise related to GP. It's supported, it works great and is an incredibly solid system. Funny story -- I also own a small consulting company that is a Microsoft partner. Back in the summer, they announced changes to the partner program that caused quite an uproar in the community where lots of people would get screwed out of being a partner (me included). After so much negative feedback from everyone (I went as far as finding the president of the partner channel on LinkedIn and nagged the heck out of her), they backed down.

I'm planning on starting our upgrade on Black Friday. It's going to be great!
