I am trying to install the newest GP 2015 Payroll tax updates at a client and have run out of ideas on how to make it work.  Their current version is 14.00.1159 I have run the GP program as Admin, logged on the server and in GP as sa.  I  also downloaded the tax.cab file and tried manually updating - and I still am not able to load the updates I get the attached error  Any thoughts on the cause?  I have not tried to runt he script yet, that is my last resort as i want to make sure they can run future updates when needed.

    Hi Dawn,

I would try and narrow it down a bit more and generate a dexsql.log file.  Is the client's system highly customized?

Out of curiosity I asked Dr Google about the following:
vb error found: retrieving the comm class factory specified module

In this post from 2006 is the cryptic advice:
One useful tool for these kinds of problems is FileMon from sysinternals: http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Filemon.html.  Run filemon on your IIS Server system and reproduce your problem.  The filemon log will show every file system access including whatever failure gave rise to the file not found exception.  Once you know what DLL is "not found" you have some chance of figuring out why it is not found.

When I asked Dr Google about:
dynamics gp vb error found: retrieving the comm class factory specified module

There were a few interesting hits you can review, but this tells you this is not a common error for dynamics GP.

Maybe the answer is to try to install the next to the most recent payroll tax upgrade for gp2015?  Or a more recent one, even if it is for Canadian tax?

Running a Dynamics SQL log will not really tell you anything pertinent, IMHO, as this is not a SQL issue.

You probably are stuck with calling GP Support.

@Bruce Strom - thank you for the reply.  I googled the heck out of the errors myself and was not finding anything super useful but thanks for the follow up.

    @Dawn Schwarz

Do you have some third party tax engine installed as this error is not from core Microsoft Dynamics GP.

    Maybe something like https://www.kampdata.com/products/taxengine

Thank you for the reply I do not believe that they have any third party software and have not had issues in the past with the update.  See set file excerpt below from their system.

OK, there is a Microsoft.Dynamics.GP.TaxEngine.exe in a clean install of Microsoft Dynamics GP.  As this is provided by Microsoft you are going to need to follow up with them.

I would suggest a repair or re-install of the application and if you still have problems, contact Microsoft Support.

    Regards

Dawn, I agree with the use of Sysinternals Procmon (their replacement for both filemon and regmon).  Search the results for the referenced clsid in the error message for hints.  Also, as mentioned, tax updates are run by a separate executable, so the DEXSQL.LOG will not likely return pertinent results.  Several suggestions:
    1. Run the update on a different workstation.
    2. Run a 'repair' on the GP client before trying the tax update again to replace or update required .dlls.
    3. Run GP 'as administrator'.
    4. Make certain your domain user has administrative rights.
    5. Run the script in SQL to update the tax tables so your client is not in panic mode pending a resolution and debug later.  All the tax update executable does is validate GP ownership through entry of the client's (or your) registered phone number, then downloads and runs the script to update or insert records into the tax table.

    Hi Charles,

So I can have a better understanding of what or when to use DEXSSQL.LOG – Would this process be used more for error messages within GP, versus windows errors?

    Thanks!!

George, the DEXSQL.LOG records all SQL-related activity between the GP client and SQL Database Services.

@Bruce Strom the following link did not work for me.  http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Filemon.html.

@Charles Ray I have opted to just do the tax updates manually to the SQL tables and I am not versed in the Sysinternals Procmon, and not sure I have any idea what to do with that :)  I did try all of your other suggested steps above with no luck.

I think @Terry Heley is probably correct it is some sort of environment issue - they have not had issues in the past running this but I have no idea what they may have done with Anti-virus and etc. on the server. I did send Terry's suggestions to the IT team for review.

Thanks everyone for the assistance, I don't think I have an answer but I was able to update tables. the manual way for now!

For what it's worth, you might reach out to @Terry Heley, she sent out something last week about Carolina and Canada having an issue so, she might be able to shed some light on the matter.
    Keep us posted, please?

Thanks Tim for including me in the post.  This error is not something we see a lot, but I have had a few cases on it over the years, and my notes indicate something 3rd party related and security in the environment that is causing the issue.  We have to remember that our tax engine is a bit out dated technology and it can cause 'quirks', thus I have this blog of the most common items we have which I think you have done most of them.  But we always have other options to get it installed if need be, Dawn you can reach out to me if it comes to that.  But usually this is something environmental stopping the engine from running.

@Dawn Schwarz Are you still running Frx?  To do so you would have to swap out a DLL for an older version.  The error message does not suggest this, but it is something to ask about.

They are not using Frx, so I assume that is all fine.
