  • 1.  Mass Product Upload Tool

We are looking for a mass product update tool to manage large uploads of product and pricing data.

Currently, our workflow is from an excel spreadsheet, a series of SQL scripts, and then SmartConnect. Is there a tool to simplify the upload to multiple database environments (development, test, and production)?

Your process sounds a lot like mine.  I am curious to see the recommendations here.

    Hi Nick,
We could do a custom application that will still use Econnect process to import the data to GP.  You could put the excel files in a directory. An process will read the file and put it in a data staging table and run any rules or process that you run in your SQL Scripts, The table then will be used to import the data to the Three environments you have using a custom import tool

Let me know if you want to discuss it further.

SmartConnect is a pretty capable tool that could probably be improved to do the job better, but if you are looking are a fairly simple solution, I am not sure if you have considered one of the third party "Copy/Paste" tools that are out there? These do much more than the standard GP copy/paste but use a similar principle and on a much broader range of "windows".
TitaniumGP are one of the options and if I remember correctly they use eConnect in the background which makes a difference if you are using the web client. If you search for "Copy/Paste for Dynamics GP" you will find a few of them though.
With a copy paste tool, you can just copy the data from Excel in the correct format, so it does need a "mapping" sheet normally and then paste that into the company you want to update. It is an oversimplification and will require manual intervention, but once setup, they work quite well and it can give that predictability across environments.
