Issue Changing Password with User Preferences

  • 1.  Issue Changing Password with User Preferences

    Posted 13 days ago
We are currently running GP2016 R2 (16.00.0716) on a SQL2016 server being accessed by a Term Server farm.
The Advanced SQL Server Options are set to Enforce Password Policy and Enforce Password Expiration.
I checked the Group Policy settings and the minimum password age is zero days.

Over the last few weeks we have noticed an issue when a user tries to change their password using User Preferences.  They can make change on the window, click OK, and the window closes.  Then an error message pops up:

Afterward another window opens stating to use the old password upon login.

At first, we thought it was a conflict between the Group Policy and GP, but the minimum password age seems to suggest it is not.
If I change the user password in the User Setup window and turn off Enforce Password Expiration, it works.
If I change the user password in the User Setup window and turn off Enforce Password Expiration, and the user tries to change it through User Preferences, the error message is generated.
We also wondered if this scenario could be occurring if the user disconnects their GP session without logging out of GP and prior to the next login, her password expires.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

    Jim

If the password changes works when the enforcement is turned off, what I recommend looking at is what your password complexity requirement is. Enforce Password Policy is not just password age but also the complexity/length rules in place. Check that and then see if the password the user is setting meets or exceeds that.

Thank you.  That makes sense.  I told her the requirements and told her to try again.
I am also going to try this in my account in our Dev environment

    @James Delmonte

As Jen mentioned, sounds like you need to look at what your Active Directory Password Policies are. These are inherited by SQL server when you enable Password Policy.

If you want an easy way to control and reset user passwords and policies, have a look at SQL Login Maintenance in GP Power Tools.

Interesting issue reported to me last night.

I am going to do some more testing, but it looks like when a user changes their password from the User Preferences window, it does not reset the number of days to expiry for the password policy.  Meaning that the password will still expire locking the user out even though they have changed their password.

I have sent this to Microsoft Support to look at as well, but I am going to see if I can fix it with a trigger in GP Power Tools.... Just another one of the many GP bugs silently fixed by GP Power Tools.

    Dave,

Interesting insight.  I will check that out also.
I am going to monitor the user today and watch how she actually tries to change her password.

    Tried a new approach today.
    1. Had her close GP and her Term Server session
    2. Log into Term Server
    3. Log into GP
    4. Navigate to User Preference
    5. Had her change password matching complexity requirements
    6. Clicked OK and Password window closed
    7. Clicked OK and User Preference window closed
    8. Received normal message that new password must be used at next login.
    9. Clicked on "X" in upper right to logout
    10. Received this message
    11. After clicking OK, received another message telling her to use the old password.

Difference between now and in the past....the error messages appear at logout.  Before they appeared while attempting to save Password change.
