Dynamics GP 2015 R2 to 2018 R2 Upgrade

  • 1.  Dynamics GP 2015 R2 to 2018 R2 Upgrade

    Posted 24 days ago
    Hello,

I'm am a new member to GPUG and have a question on upgrading from Dynamics 2015 to 2018.  Our company is planning to upgrade to the newest version of Dynamics GP 2018 R2 and I would like feedback from others who have upgraded on what their experiences where like. How was the implementation process.  Did you upgrade to a hosted version or is it client based?

    Any insights would be helpful.

    Thanks in advance!

    Tracey,

A few things, as I've done about 30 of these upgrades to 2018 now!

First and foremost, you will want to check your service pack level you're on for 2015.  To upgrade DIRECTLY to 2018R2 without having to jump to 2016 first you'll need to be on 14.00.0898 or higher on your 2015, see here for supported versions:

    https://mbs.microsoft.com/customersource/northamerica/GP/support/hot-topics/HOT_TOPIC_MDGP2018Upgrade

Second, make sure you have a "Test" server in place to test the upgrade.  You will want to run through the entire upgrade process from start to finish to make sure that it all works as expected before taking the jump.  Most of my clients will make the test server become their new production server.  Hopefully you can convince IT to spin up a shiny faster server than your current 2015 server.

Third, SQL 2012 is NO LONGER supported on GP 2018, so if you're running SQL 2012, on your new test server you'll need SQL 2014, 2016, or 2017.    My recommendation is 2017 so you'll have years of support ahead of you and take advantage of the latest SQL enhancements.    Note: If you need to apply a service pack before going to GP 2018, you'll need to be on SQL 2014, GP 2015 does NOT support SQL 2017 (and according to Microsoft 2016 is not supported either but I've seen people get it to work, why chance it though?)

Finally, check all your 3rd party products, they should all be compatible at this point with GP 2018R2, but you'll want to double check with vendors.  Known good 3rd parties include: Mekorma MICR, Smartlist Builder, and Forms Printer, there are plenty others that support 2018R2 as well.

Let me know if you have any other specific questions.   Make sure you engage your partner to help with the upgrade, they will be able to help you through all the common pitfalls.  And don't forget to have them train you on the new features of GP!

Check out my session if you're coming to GPUG in October - What's new with GP 2018 and 2018R2.

    Rob

I'll echo Rob's comments about setting up and testing the entire upgrade process on a test server.

The other comment I would make is that Microsoft made several major changes to the base query engine between 2012 and 2014.  It didn't seem to affect our Dynamics GP environment that much, but it totally destroyed our custom application performance.  The only fix we could find was setting the server compatibility level back to 2012.  It was a month-long nightmare while we fought with terrible performance and contacted every professional we could find.  So my suggestions is to make sure that any other apps you have running aren't affected in addition to Dynamics GP.

We have a large ISV (Dexterity application) that plugs into GP that supports our industry and we had the same performance issues with that.  Our only solution was to also set the compatibility back to 2012.

I have to put in a plug for this session. I attended it last year in Phoenix, and to this day I still refer to Rob's slides. One of the best sessions I attended and very relevant if you are planning on upgrading to GP2018 or have recently done so.

    Hi Tracey,
We have done lots of these upgrades with no issues. The more customization and integrations you have, the more complicated an upgrade could be. We have had lots of success moving our customers to Azure (cloud server) or PowerGP Online. So many options now! Having a great partner onboard to help you plan and assist with a test upgrade first, is the key to success.

I recommend getting feedback from a partner or consultant because its depends what you use unless you have resources to test each function. At this point you are at the tail end of 2018 R2 before the next release, so there is plenty of good experienced groups to help.

I would consider waiting for the next version which could be implemented early next year but it will depend on your situation.
