GP Alt/Mod reports

    We have been running into issues with a 3rd party vendor so they suggested we create a new TEST environment with a Vanilla copy of GP, test, than re-add each 3rd Party product back and test the issue after each to determine which product is causing the issue. Our Admin has created the new test however when we attempt to Build checks (transactions\payroll\build checks) we are getting the dictionary error. I have reloaded the customized maintenance window and verified the user id is set with the DEFAULTUSER report ID however when I go into the Payroll list there doesn't appear to be an option for the "Build checks".

    Hi @Renee Boucher

    This could be lots of stuff, but one thing I'd check is where the DYNAMICS.SET is pointing to see modified forms and reports.  If the new install is NOT pointing at the same place on each machine that is accessing it .  So, if that window is modified in one instance of GP and not the other it can cause an issue.

    The easiest way to find where it is pointing is to go to Administration>Setup>Edit Launch File on each instance of GP.
    On the machine it is installed on, go to the installation folder by right-clicking the GP Icon, and go to File Location (sometimes you have to click "properties" and open that before going to the "File Location" due to differences in Windows versions.

    In the File location, open the DYNAMICS.SET file using Notepad and review where the Modified Forms and the Modified Reports are parked.

    If the altered form is living in a different location, the new installs MUST be pointed to the same place.

    @Renee Boucher,
    On top of what Jo suggested to check, I'd also check your GP security for the users, and verify that it is not currently set to use the 'Alternate / Modified  Forms & Reports" security pointing to a customized item..
    Because if your IT department has created a new TEST environment from scratch and you didn't bring over the REPORTS.DIC or FORMS.DIC from your LIVE server (which would defeat the purpose of proceeding by elimination), than all the customizations are missing, but GP is trying to load them because the security tells so.
    I'd install the GP Power Tools (GPPT) if you haven't already, and the security profiler will tell you right away what the problem is..

    Hi Renee

    Just to comment on the items that appear in the Alternate / Modified Forms and Reports window...
    ... i think the items that appear here are those with at least 2 versions (e.g. 1099-R has a GP and Smart list version)...
    ... while those that don't mean they only have the GP / default version (e.g. i can access the Build Payroll Checks window even it it's not listed)
