We are in the process of implementing manufacturing in GP and have questions concerning non-inventory items. I was told that non inventory items cannot be included in our BOMs. That being the case we are creating item cards for all of our non inventory items. Some of the non-inventory items are less that $.01 per unit. We want to eliminate these from our BOMs but keep the MRP feature on these items if possible. We want to know if reminders can be set up in GP that would flag us to order non-inventory items on a set schedule.

    Hi Jennifer and Gunther,

If you set them items up in the item master as type sales inventory you can then set the order policy to PO Generator and put an order point on these. Then you can use the PO Generator in purchasing to have the system flag you when your on hand and on order quantity fall below your order point. It will then create the purchase orders for you. Also, if you set the standard cost to zero you can have the purchase price go to an expense account when you receive the PO rather than have the dollars go to inventory (it's one option for handling the cost). Please let me know if you have any questions on this.

You can setup Order Point Quantities for the item on the Item Resource Planning window, and it will trigger a suggestion once below that figure.   My question back to you would be, how is the inventory going to be decremented on a regular basis to keep the MRP suggestions timely so you do not run out of the items?   My suggestion would be to put the items on the BOM and have them backflushed so quantities correct and it does not cause any issue transactional activity.
