SmartList Designer Functionality

Has anyone had success with creating new SmartLists using the new SmartList Designer (GP 2013 SP2).

I tried creating a couple simple, one table, no filters, no relationship Smartlists, but they do not produce any results.  The smartlists say "Exploring" in the bottom status bar, but no records are returned.  Any ideas?

    Hi Mark.

I've been able to run SLD lists successfully.

My first thought in looking at your issue would be security.  Do you have 'normal' security access to the data in the tables you are querying?  I'm not sure what kind of access you have, but do you know what security role you are assigned?

If you happen to have access to the 'sa' password or know who does, I would maybe try logging in under sa (or having someone log in under 'sa') and see if it works then.  If so, we would know for sure it is security blocking it.

Thanks.  I tried the "sa" user and it worked.  I am assigned to "POWERUSER" role.  I don't know if that is a canned role or one that was created for me.  Not sure what to tweak to make it work.  Any ideas of where I should look?

To reference your other comment, I would agree that there needs to be more documentation on this; we as partners don't have a lot either.

To answer your question, POWERUSER is a canned role that really can't be modified; it gives essentially full access to the system so you shouldn't be running into security problems.

If you haven't tried this already, I would have your IT department make a backup and then run the grant.sql script against the company database you are dealing with.  The fact that it works for 'sa' and not for POWERUSERS would suggest to me that there could be an issue with SQL security.  I'm not sure how closely this product is built close to Smartlist Builder, but running grant.sql often cleared up access issues for SLB.  It's possible the same could be true for Smartlist Designer.

Please let me know if this works.  Thanks.

The underlying security to what objects the user can view in a SLD object, they must be granted to the specific rpt_xxx role they are assigned to in SQL security under user mappings for the company database.
